SALKANTAY TREK & TOUR
Day 1 - Arrival in Lima, Peru
Upon arrival to Lima, you will be greeted and driven to your selected hotel. If staying at the Lima airport Costa del Sol Ramada, you will only need to walk out the airport exit and across the street to your evening accommodations.
Day 2 - Lima to Cuzco
Traveling from Lima to Cuzco you will have gone from sea level to 11,500 feet. The first day you will be free to relax and acclimatize to the altitude. If you’re feeling up to it, the city center is pedestrian-friendly and makes for a great stroll. Depending on preference and price level we’re happy to recommend the city’s best options for dining and shopping.
Day 3 - Cuzco City Tour
Experience firsthand the remnants of the great Incan capital. At Sacsayhuaman you will see the largest and most impressive stonework of Pre-Columbian America. Your visits to the Koricancha and the main cathedrals will highlight the differences between Native American and European architecture.
Day 4 - Trek Cuzco to Soraypampa
Your trekking adventure begins with an early departure from Cuzco to Markocasa. From here you'll walk for about 1 hour to reach Cruzpata, a great place for taking in the snow-capped Humantay Mountain. Traveling for another 3 hours, you reach the scenic lunch spot at Checchicancha. After a relaxing lunch break, the day’s trekking continues for another 3-4 hours to reach the evening campsite at Soraypampa (12,631 ft), beautifully situated in the shadows of the surrounding peaks.
Day 5 - Trek Soraypampa to Chaullay
The day begins early with a 3 hour ascent to the high pass at 15,750 feet. Your hard work is rewarded with superb views of the nearby towering glacial peaks of Salkantay and Humantay. The day continues with a descent to Wayracmachay for lunch and another 3-4 hours walking after lunch to the campsite at Chaullay (10,000 ft).
Day 6 - Trek Chaullay to Santa Teresa
Further descending in elevation this day, you pass through Collcapampa and encounter rich vegetation, ranging from various species of orchids to fields of corn and fruit, and a beautiful waterfall. A truck awaits at La Playa to take you about 45 minutes to the town of Santa Teresa (7,218 ft), campsite for the evening. From the town, you will have the option of visiting the nearby medicinal hot springs.
Day 7 - Trek Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes
The destination for the day is the town of Aguas Calientes (6,230 ft) at the base of Machu Picchu. After breakfast, you will embark on a short bus trip and hike to get to the Hydro-Electric station near the Urubamba River. From here, you will take the train to Aguas Calientes, where you will settle into your accommodations for the evening and enjoy a hearty dinner.
Day 8 - Machu Picchu to Cuzco
Awake early to avoid the crowds at the great Inca citadel. During the morning, your guide will walk you through the details of the site's construction and examine how a city survived perched atop this mountain. The afternoon is free to continue to explore the ruins on your own before heading back to Cuzco via a scenic train ride.
Day 9 - Cuzco to Lima
On your final day you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Lima. (Optional recommended excursion) - Depending on the time of your international flight out of Peru, a private tour of Lima's key sites can be arranged. You will visit the Larco Archaeological Museum, the San Francisco Monastery and its catacombs, Lima's historic colonial squares, and the picturesque waterfront district of Miraflores.
