CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK & TOUR
Day 1 - Arrival in Lima, Peru
Upon arrival to Lima, you will be greeted and driven to your selected hotel. If staying at the Lima airport Costa del Sol Ramada, you will only need to walk out the airport exit and across the street to your evening accommodations.
Day 2 - Lima to Cuzco
Traveling from Lima to Cuzco you will have gone from sea level to 11,500 feet. The first day you will be free to relax and acclimatize to the altitude. If you’re feeling up to it, the city center is pedestrian-friendly and makes for a great stroll. Depending on preference and price level we’re happy to recommend the city’s best options for dining and shopping.
Day 3 - Cuzco City Tour
Experience firsthand the remnants of the great Incan capital. At Sacsayhuaman you will see the largest and most impressive stonework of Pre-Columbian America. Your visits to the Koricancha and the main cathedrals will highlight the differences between Native American and European architecture.
Day 4 - Trek Cuzco to Chiquisca
You will leave the Incan capital of Cuzco early and drive northwest towards Limatambo and the Apurimac River. You'll arrive at San Pedro Cachora, your point of departure for the trek. The path leads out of town with an incredible view of the snowcapped Padreyoq Mountain. You will cross the Cachora creek and climb 3 hours to your first views of the Apurimac Canyon and Choquequirao. By nightfall you will arrive at Chiquisca, the campsite for the evening (6,332 ft).
Day 5 - Trek Chiquisca to Choquequirao
After a healthy breakfast, the day begins with an hour descent to La Playa Rosalina, followed by the canyon ascent to the town of Marampata. From here, you will be able to enjoy your first vistas of Choquequirao. The hike continues to Choquequirao (9,950 ft), reaching the cloud forest campsite just in time for a beautiful sunset and the opportunity to observe condors flying nearby.
Day 6 - Trek Choquequirao to Carmen Huerto
This morning you’ll depart for the main plaza of Choquequirao. Your guide will show you the major sections of the ruins, sharing the history of this impressive site. Then you’ll descend to the Apurimac River Valley traveling through many different ecosystems before arriving at an old tropical plantation. Here you can explore ruins and eat local fruits alongside one of the largest waterfalls in the region. Finally, your day will end with an ascent to the evening campsite of Carmen Huerto (6,562 ft).
Day 7 - Trek Carmen Huerto to Huanipaca
Departing early you’ll walk out of the Apurimac River Valley in a series of ups and downs eventually arriving at Huanipaca (10,335 ft), a fantastic place to admire the Sacsarayoc glacier. The trek takes you through the Tambobamba plantations and the communities of Pacobamba and Huanipaca, providing cultural context and highlighting some of the area’s diverse historical background. Upon reaching the end of the hike, transportation will be waiting to take you back to Cuzco.
Day 8 - Cuzco to Lima
On your final day you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Lima. (Optional recommended excursion) - Depending on the time of your international flight out of Peru, a private tour of Lima's key sites can be arranged. You will visit the Larco Archaeological Museum, the San Francisco Monastery and its catacombs, Lima's historic colonial squares, and the picturesque waterfront district of Miraflores.
