Located on a private nature reserve reachable by a 2.5 hour boat ride from Puerto Maldonado, Refuigo Amazonas features a 32 bedroom lodge broken out into 4 wings. Each room has a private bathroom with cold water facilities. Embracing the wild nature of the surrounding Amazon, Refugio Amazonas has no electricity so candles and kerosene lamps light the way after dark. A stay at Refugio is often combined with a visit to its sister lodge, the Tambotata Research Center, located further down the river.

Tucked deep inside Tambopata National Reserve is the Tambopata Research Center, one of the best Amazon lodges for authentically experiencing the Amazon. During your stay you’ll be surrounded by tropical birds, river wildlife, canopy-swinging monkeys, and many other amazing Amazonian species—not surprising when the world’s largest macaw clay lick is a mere 500 meters away. The lodge consists of 18 rustic bedrooms open to the forest, and although there’s a generator, facilities are lit with kerosene lamps and candles.
