Commonly called the “White City” (Ciudad Blanco in Spanish), Arequipa gets its name from the white volcanic ash stone, "sillar", that was used to construct important houses and buildings. This white volcanic ash stone was brought down hundreds of years ago from the two 20,000 foot volcanoes that tower over the city. The city center, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, gives the visitor a sense of Arequipa’s Spanish colonial past. The nearby Santa Catalina Monastery from the 16th century boasts some of Arequipa's finest colonial architecture and reveals a unique social diversity that existed within the convent. Arequipa lights up at night with the many restaurants that feature some of the finest gastronomic arts in Peru.
